FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Two (2) hours
Do I need an actual ticket?
No, you will receive an email acknowledgement when booking. Please bring either a paper copy or a digital representation and you will be able to board.
Do sails sell out?
YES! Most public sails do end up selling out at some point in advance of the sail – it is best to buy your tickets early.
Can I use cash to buy my ticket?
Tickets MUST be purchased online at www.portexploreum.com. It is recommended to make your reservations as soon as possible in advance of your sail, even prior to coming to Port Washington. Please note that reservations purchased less than four hours prior to the sail’s departure may not appear on the ship’s printed manifest.
Would a sail ever be cancelled?
Yes, a sail may be cancelled if the captain thinks it is necessary to do so for reasons of safety. This is at his/her discretion. Normally we do not cancel due to rain or temperature. However, a sail may be cancelled due to severe storms, wind, or fog. If WE should cancel a sail, we can either reschedule you to a different date or offer a refund. In the event you arrive after the ship’s departure or are unable to participate due to personal circumstances, no refund will be provided.
What if I have to cancel a reservation?
In order to receive a full refund for any reservation YOU cancel, the cancellation must be received at least ten (10) days prior to your scheduled sail. If you wish to reschedule your sail to a different date, you must also notify us at least ten (10) days prior to your scheduled sail, in order to receive a credit toward a different sail date. Any cancellation or rescheduling request received after the ten (10) day window will receive no refund or credit.
What should I wear?
Casual attire is recommended. Please watch the weather closely and plan accordingly. Please also remember that it is usually cooler near the lake and the temperature on the lake can easily be 5-10 degrees cooler than it is on the nearby shore. The ship does sail in the rain and regardless of temperature, so please be prepared. Rubber soled shoes, sunscreen, and a hat are also recommended.
When should I arrive?
Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your sail. Please check in directly with the crew aboard the S/V Denis Sullivan, which will be docked at Coal Dock Park in Port Washington. You do not have to visit the Port Exploreum if you have already registered for a sail. Advanced reservations are highly recommended.
May I bring food, drinks, or a picnic lunch?
Coolers are not allowed and food is not encouraged. However, should you wish to bring water or a small snack, we ask that you please remember that it is a windy environment and we wish to keep Lake Michigan clean. Keep your snack or beverage in a reusable container to eliminate waste.
What do I do while we are sailing?
Sailing on the S/V Denis Sullivan is an educational experience in itself and we hope you will utilize it as such. However, you may simply relax and take in the atmosphere. Otherwise, you may take the opportunity to discuss history with her crew, learn about the Great Lakes region or Port Washington Harbor, participate in the setting of the sails, or steer the ship.
Are there restrooms aboard?
Yes, the heads are located below decks and are typical shipboard heads.
Is admission to the Port Exploreum included in my sail price?
Admission to the Port Exploreum is not included in the sail price, although if you present you sailing ticket pre or post sail, you will receive 20% off of your full admission price.
